U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa, made the following statement regarding the continuation of orchestrated and targeted attacks against the Coptic Christians in Egypt. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"Since the recent surge in violence in Egypt, the Coptic Christian community has been systematically targeted for attacks and intimidation. Islamists have orchestrated attacks on Coptic churches, schools, homes, businesses and the community as a whole, as the Coptic Christians have become a scapegoat for the pro-Morsi forces in Egypt. Their safety is in real jeopardy as they are unable to defend themselves because they are greatly outnumbered and the Egyptian security forces have been dreadfully inadequate in preventing or stopping these sectarian attacks.
"I strongly condemn these biased attacks and Coptic Christians should not be forced to fear for their lives every day. Any individual who is responsible for engaging in these violent attacks against innocent civilians should be held accountable and brought to justice. Religious tolerance is a fundamental right that must be respected and protected in order to secure peace between Muslims and Christians, and to ensure that Egypt finds the path toward democracy."
