Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI12) released the statement below following passage of H.R. 5, House Republicans' "Letting Students Down Act," which would gut education funding, eliminate and weaken protections for disadvantaged students and students in need, and fail to support our nation's educators.
"This legislation is an absolute embarrassment and a failure for our children. To gut education funding at a time like this shows a complete lack of faith and understanding of the needs of our children, our working families, and this great nation. This is nothing more than a partisan attempt at disenfranchising our youth and abandoning our education standards. Most importantly, the Republicans' bill would all but certainly render us unable to compete with the world in an area where we absolutely must. I am opposed to this measure, and call on my colleagues to refocus their attention on the needs of our children, not the partisan powers content with moving this great country backwards. We cannot afford any effort that continues to leave our children behind."
