Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI12) released the statement below following President Obama's announcement of a "grand bargain" proposal that would lower corporate tax rates and invest in manufacturing, infrastructure and education.
"Today, President Obama outlined a sustainable path toward creating jobs and boosting the economy. This country is in desperate need of investment in jobs, education, and infrastructure, without which it cannot remain competitive in the future. The President's plan, which also incorporates responsible corporate tax cuts, will help manufacturers create jobs. We can give our businesses a degree of certainty and invest in a workforce that has proved time and time again they are capable of lifting our nation up in times of need. At the same time, we in Congress need to unite behind the President and working families to pass legislation that will put this country back to work.
"I remind my colleagues that compromise is an honorable word, and an even more honorable practice. Today, President Obama laid out what I believe is an honest and thoughtful framework that will begin to move us forward--together--to do the people's business in a manner which is deserving and worthy of the respect of the American people. I hope my Republican colleagues will welcome President Obama's ideas, and put the strength and solvency of this great nation before the much-flawed superficial significance of partisan politics."
