House Passes Student Success Act

Statement

Date: July 19, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

Today the House passed H.R. 5, the Student Success Act. This bill removes many of the federal controls and mandates that are hindering the education of students in Texas. Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) issued the following statement upon passage of the bill:

"Today I voted to put control of our education system back into the hands of states, schools boards, charter schools, teachers and parents. The Student Success Act does this by limiting the Secretary of Education's authority and halting the executive overreach that has been standing in the way of student achievement. It is far past time to cut the federal red tape and give local school districts the freedom to direct resources to the programs that will help their students most."

"Our education system works best when states and local school boards are given the flexibility to address the unique needs of each child. This cannot happen when they are forced to adhere to arbitrary and outdated standards set by Washington bureaucrats far away from the classroom. Students in Texas deserve much better than the education promoted in the Administration's Common Core program."
