U.S. Congressman Brad Schneider released the following statement today after voting against the so-called Student Success Act (HR 5), legislation that would reauthorize the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), commonly known as "No Child Left Behind."
The bill would lock in deep funding cuts through fiscal year 2019, would drastically slash support for low-income children and further hurt struggling schools.
"Quality education is the foundation of our nation's future success in virtually every sector, especially in a rapidly-evolving global economy. We must ensure that our schools have the support, teachers and resources they need to educate the next generation of innovators and leaders. Everyone agrees that "No Child Left Behind" has flaws and that it needs to be updated and improved, but this bill fails to do that, instead making deep cuts to public education and removing critical accountability mechanisms."
