Mark Udall, who serves on the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement on the recent violence in Egypt and President Barack Obama's remarks today:

"The Egyptian Army says it is trying to restore order, but its actions and the mass killing of protestors are deplorable and an affront to democracy. I agree with the president that the Egyptian people deserve better, and I am glad he is canceling joint military exercises with the Egyptian military. The ongoing violence in Egypt undermines stability in the region, endangers critical trade routes and could threaten our allies throughout the Middle East. I am calling on the Egyptian military, the Muslim Brotherhood and other political parties to constructively engage with each other and reach a peaceful solution that lays the foundation for a prosperous, peaceful and stable Egypt."
