Hastings Statement on the 65th Anniversary of the End of Segregation in the United States Armed Forces

Statement

Date: July 26, 2013
Location: Fort Lauderdale, FL

Today, Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) made the following statement recognizing the 65th Anniversary of the end of segregation in the United States Armed Forces:

"Executive Order 9981 was a milestone in the march towards equal rights, ending segregation in the United States Armed Forces and allowing all Americans to fight for their country without regard to race. Since then, millions of men and women of many ethnicities, races, and backgrounds have served with distinction and made great sacrifices in defense of our nation.

"As we honor the 65th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9981, we must remain vigilant to ensure continued progress on all fronts in the cause of equality. From the recent Supreme Court decision weakening the Voting Rights Act, efforts to restrict the ability of minorities to vote, and disproportionately high levels of unemployment in minority communities, it is clear that much work remains to ensure equal opportunity for all.

"Today, we reflect on the courage of the brave men and women who refused to accept the status-quo, fighting for the chance to fight for their nation as equals. We honor their commitment by continuing the struggle for equal opportunity in the face of new adversity."

Congressman Alcee L. Hastings serves as Senior Member of the House Rules Committee, Ranking Democratic Member of the U.S. Helsinki Commission, and Co-Chairman of the Florida Delegation.
