Nadler Welcomes Holder's Announcement on Mandatory Minimum Sentences

Statement

Date: Aug. 12, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution and Civil Justice, released the following statement:

Attorney General Eric Holder's announcement today on mandatory minimum sentences is welcome news. I have long been a critic of mandatory sentences because they deny federal judges the flexibility to issue appropriate sentences. A one size fits all approach -- especially for low-level, nonviolent drug offenders -- overburdens our already overcrowded prisons and needlessly costs taxpayers billions of dollars. As the Attorney General correctly pointed out, mandatory minimums do not help improve the justice system or make our communities any safer.
