In a letter to her colleagues, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), along with fellow co-chairs Congs. Jim Costa, Dave Camp, and Wm. Lacy Clay, is asking additional Members of Congress to join the Congressional Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Caucus.
The goal of the Caucus is to educate other Members and the American people about organ and tissue donation and the importance of being an organ donor. Ros-Lehtinen was also a Co-Chair of the Caucus in the 112th Congress and is committed to raising awareness of and increasing organ and tissue transplants in and outside of her South Florida district.
Said Ros-Lehtinen, "At the moment, there are more than 120,000 people waiting for organ transplants in our nation and the lack of available organs is a national crisis. As a Co-Chair of the Congressional Organ and Tissue Donation Caucus, we are asking other colleagues to join our endeavor and help us spread awareness over the desperate need for more organ donations. Just one person becoming an organ donor can save several lives with their precious gift."
Note: The text of the letter is below.
Did you know that more than 120,000 people are currently waiting for organ transplants? Unfortunately, despite incredible advances in medical science and technology thousands of these patients will die each year waiting for a suitable match. For these patients, organ donation is truly a matter of life or death. Experts suggest that just one donor could help as many as 50 people receive the organs or tissues they desperately need. Still, myths and misconceptions about organ and tissue donation are pervasive.
The mission of the Congressional Caucus for Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness will be to dispel fears and misconceptions surrounding the donor process and educate all Americans on the importance of committing to become organ and tissue donors. The Caucus will support federal and private sector efforts to increase donation and transplantation by raising the awareness of the national organ shortage, both within the U.S. Congress and in the general public.
