Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) released the following statement today after Maryland State officials announced that violent crime, homicides, and property crime in Maryland have been driven down to the lowest rates since 1975:
"This year's historic reduction in crime is good news for families, businesses, and neighborhoods across the state of Maryland. We owe our thanks to the federal, state, and local law enforcement officials who coordinated efforts to drive down total crime by 2.9% since last year, with the lowest number of total crimes and lowest total crime rate reported in Maryland since 1975. I commend their efforts as well as the leadership of the O'Malley-Brown Administration. Their commitment to partnering with law enforcement officials, community leaders, and other stakeholders has yielded significant results.
"While we've made historic gains, there is still more work to do to keep Marylanders safe, and I remain committed to working together to build on this progress and enhance public safety in our state."
