The coalition supporting Obamacare is fraying. This week, 35 Democrats voted for the employer mandate delay and 22 for the individual mandate delay. These Democrats recognize it is unlawful for the President to pick and choose what parts of the law he is going to enforce and that if big business is going to get a break from Obamacare, small businesses, families, and invididuals should be spared as well. These votes are in addition to the 7 bills already signed into law repealing various parts of the Affordable Care Act.
In another high profile embarrassment for the Administration, the heads of three major labor unions, traditionally some of the President's strongest allies, became the latest members of the bipartisan opposition to Obamacare. In a strongly worded letter to the President, they warned that Obamacare would "Destroy the foundation of the 40-hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class" and "The law as it stands will hurt millions of Americans."
We were told repeatedly the President's health care law would become more popular with time. Rising costs, lost coverage and jobs have conspired to prove the opposite. The more people see what is in it, the more they realize it is a train wreck all Americans should be spared from enduring.
Fortunately, we do not have to settle for Obamacare or for the health care system as it existed prior. We should replace Obamacare with a system that is not controlled by government bureaucrats, and also not driven by insurance company accountants. Better quality and lower cost health care must start with placing doctors and patients at the center of health care decisions.
