Today, Department of Justice (DOJ) Attorney General Eric Holder singled out the State of Texas and stated the Justice Department would ask a San Antonio-based federal court to enforce a preclearance formula that would require Texas to receive permission from the federal government before the State can make changes to its voting and election laws. This same preclearance law was declared unconstitutional and struck down by the Supreme Court last month.
In response, Rep. Ralph Hall (TX-04) released the following statement:
"It is unfortunate, but comes as no surprise that this Administration would attempt to circumvent current law that just last month the Supreme Court declared both discriminatory and unconstitutional. Rather than interfere with Texas elections and push partisan agendas, Attorney General Holder should focus on helping Texas defend its borders."
