Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement in response to a letter sent by 15 Democratic Governors from across the country urging both Democratic and Republican House leadership to support and pass comprehensive immigration reform:
"Today, governors representing a diverse cross-section of the United States joined millions of Americans in sending Congress a clear and simple message: the time is now to fix our broken immigration system. For generations, immigrants have laid the foundations, enriched the culture, and reinvigorated the economy that defines the country they call home. House Democrats stand ready to pass commonsense and comprehensive immigration reform that advances this tradition in the laws of our land.
"Leaders in city halls and state capitols nationwide know that immigration reform is not only the right thing to do, it is a necessary step we must take to protect our workforce, reduce our deficit, and grow our economy. The Senate has already worked in a bipartisan way to take this step, and now it is the House's turn to act. The bipartisan taskforce of seven continues to work together to deliver a proposal that secures our borders, protects our workers, unites families, and offers an earned pathway to citizenship.
"These are the basic principles that are embedded into the fabric of America's history and will ensure its future strength. We must act to ensure that Congress honors the values, heritage, and hope that makes America more American."
