Leader Cantor: We All Agree Obamacare Will Not Work

Statement

"For four years now, Republicans have been warning about the devastating consequences of ObamaCare and the devastating consequences it will have on jobs, on health care, and on our economy. Finally, what we saw over the last couple of weeks is that the President and the Democrats agree with us. President Obama demonstrated a few weeks ago that he agreed by unilaterally delaying the employer mandate. And he did so while leaving individual citizens behind.

"Also last week, three Democratic union leaders wrote a letter to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid -- and let me read some of this letter for you. They said, "the Affordable Care Act will shatter not only our hard-earned health benefits, but destroy the foundation of the 40-hour work week that is the backbone of the American middle class.' These Democratic union leaders go on to say, "The unintended consequences of the ACA are severe. Perverse incentives are already creating nightmarish scenarios.' Then they conclude, "We can no longer stand silent in the face of elements of the Affordable Care Act that will destroy the very health and wellbeing of our members, along with millions of other hard-working Americans.'

"So this is what the Democrats are now saying about the Affordable Care Act. The President has now unilaterally decided to delay some of the law because it's not ready for prime time. Obviously, we don't believe it will ever be ready for prime time. But clearly this is common ground. If we believe the employer mandate is not ready, then we ask the Democrats to join us in the House in this vote today.

"We all agree that promises were broken and ObamaCare will not work. So the House is going to codify the President's delay, because he does not have the authority to do so unilaterally. And will we do what the President didn't. We will extend that basic fairness to all Americans. No family's health, wellbeing, or employment should suffer while businesses get a break. I hope that our colleagues on the other side of the aisle, as well as the other side of the Capitol, will join us in this reaching common ground."
