Gov. Tomblin Highlights the Economic Impact of Construction of The Summit

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin today highlighted the economic impact of past, current, and planned construction activity at The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve, occurring from 2010-2013.

"It's been a remarkable experience seeing The Summit develop from an idea, to a construction site, and now to completion," Gov. Tomblin said. "This world-class location has not only made a major impact on the local economy through new employment opportunities during its construction phase, it will also continue to be a source of economic activity for years to come as its popularity draws visitors from across the globe."

The economic impact of The Summit includes job growth in the construction industry as well as employment opportunities in the professional, scientific and technical, utility, and health care industries. To date the Summit has:

* Supported, on average of 848 local jobs each year--543 directly, and another 305 indirectly

* Provided labor income amounts totaling $169.7 million into the local economy
o $121.4 million directly through employment income, including wages and benefits as well as proprietor income
o $48.3 million indirectly through the impact of local industries buying goods and services from area companies

* Generated $45.1 million in additional tax revenues for the four years
o $15.8 million in state and local collections
o $29.3 million in federal collections
