U.S. Congressman David N. Cicilline released the following statement as House Republicans prepared to pass a farm bill that would fail to reauthorize critical nutrition programs, leaving millions of low-income families facing the possibility of food insecurity:
"American families have a right to be outraged at the chaotic approach that Republicans are taking to such important legislation. Since taking control of the House, the Republican leadership has consistently waited until the eleventh hour to pass narrow-minded proposals that placate their conservative base at the expense of working families. Once again, Republicans have mishandled consideration of a critical piece of legislation and it is unacceptable that we now find ourselves in this position."
"Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor should have worked with Democrats to find a commonsense, bipartisan solution. Instead, they have taken a bad situation and somehow made it even worse. The House Republican farm bill put millions of families at risk in order to protect subsidies for large agricultural corporations and score political points with Tea Party activists."
"This sort of political posturing from House Republicans is no substitute for real leadership."
