Congressman Dent's Statement on the House Approach to Immigration Reform

Location: Unknown

The Speaker said today that the House will not consider the Senate's immigration bill. There were real problems with the Senate's bill. The border security elements needed to be improved and in my opinion the bill failed to adequately address the broken legal immigration system -- which means that people will still try to enter the country illegally because the demand for their labor will still exist.

The House will consider a series of bills that more responsibly address border security and interior enforcement with the effectiveness of these measures to be judged by the independent Government Accountability Office (GAO). The House bills will also work to effectively address the economy's needs for workers at all skill levels. Finally, we will work on practical solutions that respect the rule of law while responsibly dealing with the 11 million people, slightly less than the population of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, who are in this country unlawfully.
