Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI12) released the statement below in opposition to H.R. 2642, the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management Act of 2013, which does not contain reauthorization of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) included in the Farm Bill that the House failed to pass on June 20, 2013.
"This incomplete and irresponsible Farm Bill flies in the face of the very values and beliefs that have made our country great since the moment of its inception. To exclude necessary nutrition programs that so many hardworking American families rely on is an affront to the principles that all Americans hold dear--that our society is to be judged by how we care for the least among us. This legislation fails that test, and with its consideration today it saddens me to say that we are failing the American people. Now is not the time to weaken the social safety net that feeds our children--in classrooms and at home--and helps to nourish and care for our elderly.
"I am ashamed of this bill, the way in which it was brought before this House, and the very belief that this body would consider legislation abandoning so many American families. House Republicans have once again decided to put their meager politics before ideological purity."
