Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and a member of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement today in response to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' report that the U.S. economy added 195,000 jobs in June and the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6 percent:
"Today's jobs numbers continue to illustrate the resilience of our country and our economy. It is now - and has always been - Congress' responsibility to ensure that our economic recovery continues, while ensuring that all Americans have access to the tools of prosperity: affordable housing, healthcare, education, and the opportunity to compete for good jobs. The time to act is now. I call on Congressional Republicans to abandon their policies that gut the essential programs so many of our poorest Americans rely upon, and instead support balanced legislation that will make day-to-day living easier for all Americans."
