Rep. Keith Ellison, Co-Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and Chief Deputy Whip, released the following statement today after the Supreme Court struck down Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act as unconstitutional, and issued a procedural ruling in the Proposition 8 case that will allow same-sex marriages to resume in the state of California.
"Today, the Supreme Court put America one step closer to marriage equality for all Americans. I am relieved and thrilled that the Supreme Court struck down Section 3 of the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and reinstated marriage equality in California.
"As a result of the Supreme Court's ruling on DOMA, same-sex married couples will finally receive equal treatment under more than 1,000 federal laws and benefit programs. On the Proposition 8 case, a majority of justices affirmed the appeals court ruling that will allow same-sex marriage in California.
"More Americans everyday are standing up for marriage equality. This past fall, Minnesotans put themselves on the right side of history when they rejected an intolerant anti-marriage amendment to take our state backward. This spring, we took our state forward by ensuring marriage equality for all Minnesotans.
"But there are still thousands a of gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender couples who live in states that treat them and their families as second-class citizens. And millions continue to see their right to vote under threat. We must continue to make sure our laws live up to the immortal words, "liberty and justice for all.'"
