Today, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere Matt Salmon (AZ-05) issued the following statement regarding the release of the State Department report on the influence of Iran in the Western Hemisphere.
"Today's report from the State Department is underwhelming, lacks appropriate depth and is an incomplete portrayal of Iran and it's surrogates' efforts to expand their influence in the Western Hemisphere. Given the importance that this issue has to America's national security I believe the American people deserve a more accurate picture on this issue. I do not agree with the report's claim that "Iranian influence in Latin America and the Caribbean is waning' and intend to hold a hearing before my Subcommittee in the very near future."
This report was required by fellow subcommittee member Congressman Jeff Duncan's legislation, the Countering Iran in the Western Hemisphere Act, which Congress passed and the president signed into Public Law 112-220 in December 2012.
