Hoyer Statement on Naming of House Democratic Budget Conferees

Statement

Date: June 27, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today after Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi named House Democratic budget conferees:

"As I have said repeatedly since the House passed its budget nearly 100 days ago, Speaker Boehner has no excuse for his refusal to finish our work on a budget -- a goal Republicans once shared. Democrats have now named our conferees, led by Budget Committee Ranking Member Chris Van Hollen, and are ready to begin the process of reconciling the House and Senate budgets. It is time for Speaker Boehner to do the same.

"A budget conference will create an opportunity for bipartisan compromise on a balanced solution to our deficits that can replace the sequester with a sensible approach. We should not waste time on partisan issues while the irrational policy of sequester continues to hurt our economy and harm our national security. Only a big, balanced, and bipartisan agreement can replace the sequester -- and only after the Speaker acts can a conference committee begin its work to achieve such an agreement."
