Congressman Garcia Pushes for Comprehensive Immigration Reform

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joe Garcia (D-FL) will speak out today in the House Judiciary Committee against H.R. 2278, the Strengthen and Fortify Enforcement (SAFE) Act, an enforcement-only bill that would allow states to pass their own immigration laws and enable local police to act as immigration officers.

"We need comprehensive immigration reform that moves our nation forward, not a piecemeal bill that takes us backward. This same kind of enforcement-only bill was a non-starter in 2005, and the same is true today. The SAFE Act will hurt our economy, endanger our communities, and do nothing to fix our broken immigration system" Garcia said.

Congressman Garcia will offer an amendment during the Committee's markup of the bill to delay any criminalization provisions under the SAFE Act until there is a legalization program in place for current immigrants.
