Statement: Rep. Slaughter Reacts to SCOTUS Decision Gutting Civil Rights Act

Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (NY-25) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision to repeal key provisions of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Slaughter said, "The Voting Rights Act is one of our democracy's most effective tools against voter suppression and discrimination, and today's decision is a major blow to our ability to protect Americans' sacred right to vote. In a clear display of judicial arrogance, five justices of the Supreme Court decided that they know better than 390 members of Congress and 98 members of the Senate who voted to reauthorize this historic law just seven years ago. From the dreadful Citizens United decision which opened our elections up to floods of secret money to dismantling one of the most important civil rights laws in American history, the Roberts court has done significant damage to our democracy."
