Congressman Joe Kennedy released the following statement tonight after Congressman Ed Markey was declared the winner of the special election to fill Massachusetts' open U.S. Senate seat.
"Senator-elect Ed Markey has spent his career bringing Massachusetts values to Washington. At a time when climate change, immigration reform and marriage equality are all on the table, those unwavering principles are more essential than ever. Though his experience and expertise will be missed in the House, I know he will join Senator Warren in ensuring Massachusetts is a force to be reckoned with in the US Senate. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Senator-elect Markey, his wife, Susan, and the volunteers across our state who worked tirelessly for this victory.
"I would also like to commend Senator Mo Cowan on the tremendous work he has done in service to our Commonwealth over these past few months. He effortlessly stepped in to fill enormous shoes and ensured Massachusetts did not spend a second without two senators looking out for them in Washington. He will be missed around the Capitol, but I have no doubt he will remain actively involved in the future of his beloved hometown."
