Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico's Third District released the following statement today after President Obama introduced his Climate Action Plan to address the threat of climate change and its impacts on communities across the country.

"The time has come to take action to address the impact of climate change and I applaud President Obama for his leadership. As a member of the Safe Climate Caucus, I have joined a number of my Democratic colleagues to bring attention to this pressing issue and urge Congress to take action. In the face of House Republicans' unwillingness to act or have a serious discussion, President Obama is meeting this challenge head on.

"Global climate change is contributing to severe drought conditions, more intense fire seasons, and drier and hotter summers -- all of which are being felt in New Mexico. Addressing climate change is not only important for our environment, but it is also important for our economy. Creating an energy economy powered by clean energy resources including solar and wind will spur new jobs, new technological advancements, and grow our economy.

"President Obama is putting forth solutions that will allow us to use power in a smarter manner, produce clean and abundant renewable energy, and reduce emissions through energy efficiency. While the President's plan will get the ball rolling, a number of details will be worked out in the regulatory process, and I look forward to reviewing them as the process moves forward."
