U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita, a former two-term Indiana Secretary of State, today issued the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling in Shelby County v. Holder:
"Today's ruling is an affirmation of the great strides we have made as a nation. Protecting our sacred right to vote has long been one of my top priorities, both as Secretary of State and now as a Member of Congress. I look forward to working to make sure that federal voting rights legislation complies with the Supreme Court's decision today," said Rokita.
During his service as Indiana's Secretary of State, Rokita implemented Indiana's landmark voter identification law and participated in the successful defense of the law when it was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2008. Under Rokita's leadership, the Secretary of State's office also built Indiana's statewide voter file, installed new voting equipment, and made voting more convenient by harnessing technology so that voting centers could be used if counties chose to do
