Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today released the following statement in reaction to the Supreme Court ruling striking down part of the Voting Rights Act.
"Today's radical decision by five conservative members of the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act is disgraceful. Voting is the most fundamental right in our democracy. We should be looking at ways to expand the right to vote and to encourage more citizens to participate in our democracy. Yet, the Supreme Court today makes it easier for states with a history of discrimination to erect laws designed to keep valid voters from having their voices heard. The Court's blatant disregard of centuries of discrimination, contempt for voters throughout the country, and disrespect for Congress which overwhelmingly extended the Voting Rights Act in 2006 should outrage all Americans."
