Miller and Issa on Closure of House Postal Facilities

Press Release

Committee on House Administration Chairman Candice Miller, R-Mich., and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., issued the following statement after receiving confirmation that the United States Postal Service (USPS) is following their recommendation to close the underutilized House facilities:

"We are encouraged that the United States Postal Service has heeded our request and is moving forward with the consolidations of the post office facilities in the House office buildings.

"Congress should lead by example and not treat itself to a higher level of service than it needs or is available to the average American. The cost savings from these consolidations are a small but symbolically important step in restoring USPS to long-term financial solvency."

Background:

On April 4, 2013, Chairmen Miller and Issa sent Postmaster General Donahoe a letter requesting that the Postal Service close its facilities located in the U.S. Capitol and the Rayburn and Cannon House Office Buildings. In their letter, they noted low usage of the facilities and the additional burden on ratepayers to keep them open. Currently, USPS is planning to consolidate its services to the Ford and Longworth House Office Buildings.
