Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after the U.S. Senate voted to end debate on the Corker-Hoeven amendment to comprehensive immigration reform by a vote of 67-27:
"Tonight, the U.S. Senate acted in a bipartisan way to move our country one step closer to achieving commonsense, comprehensive immigration reform. House Democrats, under the leadership of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus and the Tri-Caucus, have been working for years to pass legislation that reflects our heritage and upholds our values; with this vote, the process moves forward and our goal is in sight.
"As the Senate completes passage of its immigration reform bill, the House must also come together in a bipartisan way to enact legislation that secures our borders, protects our workers, unites families, and offers an earned pathway to citizenship.
"In every generation, immigrants reinvigorate our economy, bringing hopes, aspiration, and determination to build a better future to our shores. Every immigrant who comes to our country with that optimism makes America more American. In our time, we must advance that same tradition by finally enacting comprehensive immigration reform."
