Statement: Congresswoman Jackie Speier Calls Failed House Farm Bill "Punitive And Destructive'

Today, Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) released a statement on the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management (FARM) Act, HR 1947:

"Today, I voted against the House farm bill (H.R. 1947), which failed to pass the House of Representatives by a vote of 195-234. Why? Because this legislation was punitive and destructive. It would have hurt family farmers, children, seniors, veterans, and the disabled. On one hand, it would have cut $20 billion in nutrition assistance. On the other hand, it would have expanded crop insurance subsidies by $9 billion a year over the next 10 years, without calling for basic disclosure of who received those excessive subsidies. Those numbers don't add up.

"Overall, the bill was a blow against transparency and an insult to taxpayers. Instead of fixing problems, it would have created more. And so, the farm bill in its current form was voted down in the House for the first time since its introduction in 1973. It's tough to say which was more wasteful: the bill's provisions or the bill itself."
