Cornyn: CBO Estimates Gang Bill Only Reduces Illegal Immigration by 25%

Statement

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) issued the following statement after the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) found that if passed, S.744 would only decrease illegal immigration by 25%:

"The CBO confirms what I and other conservatives have been saying throughout this debate: this bill as written repeats the same mistakes made in the past and will not solve the problem of illegal immigration.

"The border security rhetoric from Washington has been tough, but the results have been pathetic. The reality on the ground in Texas and in other border states has been quite different.

"If we're ever going to push immigration reform across the finish line, which I want to do, we need to guarantee results, and my amendment does that."

BACKGROUND

Under S.744, CBO Estimates the Illegal Immigrant Population Would Still Be 7.5 Million by 2033. "However, other aspects of the bill would probably increase the number of unauthorized residents--in particular, people overstaying their visas issued under the new programs for temporary workers. CBO estimates that, under the bill, the net annual flow of unauthorized residents would decrease by about 25 percent relative to what would occur under current law…" (P.23, Congressional Budget Office Cost Estimate, 6/18/2013)
