Hoyer Statement on Abortion Bill

Statement

Date: June 18, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Women Abortion

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in opposition to H.R. 1797, the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, which passed the House this evening:

"I am deeply disappointed that Republicans once again spent time debating and voting on a bill to restrict women's access to health care when they continue to block the consideration of bills that would invest in creating jobs and replace the sequester with a balanced alternative. Their governing priorities are as out of touch as their approach to women's health. This bill, which is unconstitutional, has no chance of being considered in the Senate or reaching the President's desk.

"Instead of focusing on partisan issues that play to the extreme wing of their party, Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Cantor ought to work with Democrats to tackle the pressing issues that demand Congress's immediate attention: jobs and deficits. I hope they will refrain from further partisan exercises and instead work with us to achieve results for all Americans -- including the tens of millions of American women whose freedom to make their own health care choices Democrats will continue to defend."
