Lamborn Blasts Obama's Offer to Unilaterally Reduce Nukes

Statement

Congressman Doug Lamborn (CO-05), a senior member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, today blasted President Obama's offer to unilaterally reduce the U.S. nuclear stockpile by one-third.

"This is the worst possible way to begin a negotiation on nuclear arms reduction. President Obama wants to give up what should be a bargaining chip without getting anything from the Russians in return.

"Even more troubling, in the past the U.S. example of reducing our nuclear stockpile has not inspired rogue regimes such as Iran and North Korea to abandon their nuclear ambitions, or encouraged other nuclear-armed nations to reduce their stockpiles. It will actually increase the incentives for the allies who are under our nuclear umbrella to develop their own nuclear programs.

Note: Congressman Lamborn worked to include the following amendments to the FY 2014 National Defense Authorization Act which passed the House last week:

A requirement that the President maintain all three legs of the nuclear triad.
A financial restriction until the National Nuclear Security Agency (NNSA) certifies that a nuclear weapons modernization program is on the promised schedule.
A financial restriction until the President certifies that no participating country in the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is violating the treaty (via full committee amendment).
The CTBT amendment also prohibited U.S. funds donated to CTBT from being used for lobbying or advocacy in the United States.
