Pingree Statement on the Failure of House to Pass a Farm Bill

Statement

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree issued the following statement on the failure of the Farm Bill in the U.S. House today:

Failure to pass the Farm Bill is a failure of leadership in the U. S. House. Millions of Americans--including farmers, school children and working families--depend on the programs that are included in the Farm Bill, and Congressional leadership failed them today.

House Republican leadership rejected numerous bipartisan amendments that would have generated more support for the bill, including provisions to increase support for local foods, restrict subsidies for the richest corporate farms in America, and address the GMO issue. Instead, they took cruel, drastic cuts to the SNAP (food stamp program) and made them even worse by adding provisions that would have made it even harder for struggling families to access those benefits.
