Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY), ranking House Democrat on the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) issued its scoring of the comprehensive immigration reform package currently being considered in the U.S. Senate. The CBO estimates the bill will result in $175 billion in net deficit reduction through 2023.

"The CBO report is good news for those of us committed to comprehensive immigration reform. While it should not come as a surprise that more taxpaying citizens means a smaller federal deficit, this report removes yet another potential reason opponents can use to stall or stop these common-sense reforms. Immigrants have already played a crucial role in the economic growth of our nation, and implementing a comprehensive immigration package would position us on a trajectory for substantial new growth--at a time we really need it--while also cutting our deficit over the long haul.

"If the House Majority cannot wrangle a majority of its caucus in support of this approach, Speaker Boehner should still call a vote on the legislation which we now know will reduce the deficit and boost economic growth."
