Congressman Kevin McCarthy (CA-23) released the following statement in regard to the House passage of the fiscal year 2014 National Defense Authorization Act:
"The brave men and women in our military who risk their lives every day to protect our nation and preserve the liberties we enjoy as Americans -- including the military and civilian defense personnel at Naval Air Weapons Station at China Lake (NAWS) and Edwards Air Force Base - must be equipped to perform their duties and provide for themselves and their families during and after their time of service. Today's vote responds to these critical needs by providing the resources necessary for defense and keeps military pay competitive with private sector wages. At the same time, this legislation applies responsibility to the defense budget. Failing to identify and fix the programs within our Armed Services that are falling short of their intended purpose puts other military functions at greater risk and wastes taxpayers' money.
"I am also proud that this bill includes legislation, which I authored, to secure the future of NAWS and save taxpayer dollars by permanently conveying the land used by the base to Department of the Navy. As one of our nation's premier defense installations, I am pleased that my provision recognizes China Lake's strategic importance and is strongly supported by the community. I urge the Senate to move quickly to provide certainty and support to our military and the millions who have served with tremendous honor."
