Statement from Governor Jan Brewer Honoring our Nation's Flag

Statement

Date: June 14, 2013
Location: Phoenix, AZ

"Every year on this day, we celebrate the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as our nation's flag. On this anniversary, I encourage all Arizonans to reflect on the history of our flag, and to commemorate the enduring American values for which it stands.

"Since 1777, "Old Glory' has served as our country's most recognizable and revered symbol of freedom and opportunity. Whether in times of tragedy or triumph, its image conjures a sense of patriotism that is uniquely American. It reminds us of our humble origins and our hard-fought path to independence. It reminds us of our rights and responsibilities as citizens of this great Republic. Most of all, it reminds us of the men and women who have died to defend it, and of those who continue to serve. On this occasion, it is important that we pay homage to heroes in uniform -- past and present -- who have fought to preserve its legacy.

"On the birthday of the Stars and Stripes, let us offer a prayer for the men and women who have served and sacrificed on its behalf. Finally, I urge all individuals to proudly display, salute and always pledge allegiance to the American flag."
