Statement by Congressman Ted Deutch on the 2013 Iranian Elections

Statement

Congressman Ted Deutch (FL-21), Ranking Democrat on the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa and a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released this message regarding today's elections in Iran:

"Today, the people of Iran headed to the polls to participate in a flawed and undemocratic election. Before even one ballot was cast, the Supreme Leader went to great lengths to ensure that one of his own proxies is elected by disqualifying hundreds of qualified candidates. As we saw in 2009, the regime is willing to engage in large scale vote-rigging and to ruthlessly suppress any and all dissent. I strongly condemn any electoral manipulation and repression of the Iranian people's efforts to fully participate in a democratic election.

"Despite being deprived by their government of free, fair, and credible elections, the Iranian people continue to look for small opportunities to have their voices heard and advocate for real democracy in Iran. As we wait for the results, I continue to stand with the Iranian people in their demands for democracy and human rights in Iran."
