Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, D-Oregon, is meeting Monday morning with the owner of Tigard company Handful, Inc., a maker of sports bras, in part to draw attention to three bills Bonamici says would promote U.S.-based manufacturing.
"More and more companies are beginning to see the advantages of moving manufacturing back to the United States," Bonamici said in a news release. "Handful is proving that it can be done. The ability to directly oversee your production line, improved product quality, and the Made in America label are all advantages. I'm working to pass a "Make it in America' agenda that rewards companies for creating jobs here instead of overseas."
Handful recently announced plans to transition its manufacturing from a plant in China to a factory in Salem. Company chief executive Jennifer Ferguson has said the transition will allow Handful to bring new products to market more quickly, improve product quality control and allow management more direct access to the manufacturing process.
Bonamici is working to pass three bills to encourage domestic manufacturing:
The Bring the Jobs Home Act would provide businesses with a tax credit worth 20 percent of the expenses incurred by relocating a business location to the United States.
The Make it in America Manufacturing Act would establish competitive grants for state and regional manufacturing partnerships, which could be used to provide loans to manufacturers and help small manufacturers export their products.
The Advancing Innovative Manufacturing (AIM) Act would establish pilot projects to develop public private partnerships for the promotion of advanced manufacturing.
Bonamici is scheduled to meet with Ferguson this morning at the fulfillment center for Handful in Beaverton.
Handful is working with Crowd Supply of Portland to help finance the move to Oregon manufacturing.
Ferguson, a personal trainer, founded Handful in 2006. The company makes a line of bras and tank tops featuring removable pads. One of the company's products, The Handful, is an approved mastectomy bra.
