Cassidy Pushes Senate To Resolve Flood Insurance Crisis

Statement

Date: June 12, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. led a bi-partisan group of U.S. Representatives in urging the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations to block FEMA's implementation of projected flood insurance rate spikes caused by the Biggert-Waters Act of 2012. Congressman Cassidy issued the following statement:

"The Biggert-Waters Act has empowered FEMA to impose flood insurance rate spikes on families and small businesses. FEMA is using flawed methodology that ignores local flood protections which have kept homes safe for decades.

"The House acted by passing the amendment I sponsored with Reps. Grimm, Palazzo and Richmond to block FEMA's implementation of certain rate spikes. It is now time for the Senate to take action. Together, we can reform the National Flood Insurance Program and FEMA's implementation powers. This would ensure that flood insurance rates impacted by Section 207 of Biggert-Waters account for local flood protections and families are not driven out of homes which were built to code and are complaint with present law."
