Hatch Supports Amendment to Immigration Bill to Strengthen Border Security

Statement

Date: June 12, 2013
Issues: Immigration

U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), a current member and former Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, today cosponsored an amendment introduced by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) to the immigration reform legislation (S. 744) that will strengthen border security provisions in the bill. The Cornyn amendment requires 100 percent situation awareness and full operational control of the Southern border, a fully operational biometric exit system, and a nationwide E-verify system.

"This amendment is exactly the type of change that needs to be made to this bill to make it better. It's a smart, thoughtful approach to ensure we have full control over our borders and know exactly who is coming into our country and who is going out," Hatch said. "If anyone understands what's needed to strengthen our borders it's a Senator from Texas, and this amendment by Senator Cornyn is a good faith effort to make this bill better. I hope our colleagues on both sides of the aisle will support it."
