Committee to Hold Hearing with SBA Inspector General, Hearing on Raising Capital for Small Businesses

Press Release

Date: May 31, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

The House Small Business Committee, chaired by Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO), today announced the schedule for the week of June 3, 2013:

On Wednesday, June 5, at 1:00 p.m., the House Small Business Committee will conduct a hearing titled Reducing Duplication and Promoting Efficiency at the SBA: The Inspector General's View. The purpose of the hearing is to examine how the Inspector General audits and assesses the SBA, and how that process can help the agency become a more efficient organization and save money for U.S. taxpayers.

"Every major bureaucracy can become more efficient and reduce duplication, and the SBA is no exception," said Chairman Graves. "The nation is carrying a heavy burden of debt. Every federal program should get a thorough inspection for ways to improve and save taxpayer money. I look forward to the Inspector General's insight into SBA programs."

On Thursday, June 6, at 10:00 a.m., the Small Business Subcommittee on Investigations, Oversight and Regulations, under the chairmanship of Rep. David Schweikert (R-AZ), will conduct a hearing titled Financing America's Small Businesses: Innovative Ideas for Raising Capital. The purpose of the hearing is to review several innovative financing options and determine how those methods are meeting entrepreneurs' needs.

"One of the most damaging impacts of the current economic downturn has been a lack of access to capital and credit, particularly for small businesses," said Subcommittee Chairman Schweikert. "Small businesses are the engine of our country's economic growth, and when innovators and job creators lack the ability to invest in their own success, it hurts us all. In response to this demand, new and innovative financing tools such as crowdfunding and peer-to-peer lending have arisen to fill capital needs. With efficient and low cost platforms for connecting ideas to capital, this groundbreaking movement is changing the way we finance the future."
