Rep. Paul Cook (R-Yucca Valley) issued the following statement upon hearing of the Obama administration's collection of data from Verizon customers:
"This news about the administration's handling of Verizon phone records is troubling. Over the last month we've seen a series of cases where the Obama administration is playing fast and loose with the privacy rights of the American people. This kind of dragnet surveillance exceeds the bounds of authority set by even the Patriot Act. I want a thorough investigation into what's taking place here."
A member of the House Armed Services, Veterans' Affairs, and Foreign Affairs Committees, Cook served as an infantry officer and retired as a Colonel after 26 years in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was awarded the Bronze Star medal with valor device and two Purple Hearts for actions in combat.
