Braley Statement on Wrestling Making Shortlist for Inclusion in Olympics

Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) released the following statement today after the International Olympic Committee executive board announced it would include wrestling on a shortlist of sports to be considered for inclusion in the Olympic Games in 2020 and 2024. A final decision will be made on September 8 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

"The IOC's recommendation is a step forward for keeping wrestling where it belongs: as part of the Olympic program. Wrestling is among the oldest Olympic sports, dating to the games of the ancient Greeks. Iowans are rightfully proud of our state's long history of wrestling excellence.

"The IOC's decision in February to drop it from the Olympic Games was arbitrary and I hope today's news signifies that the IOC has heard the outcry among wrestlers, coaches, and fans from Iowa and across the world."
