Chairman Matt Salmon (AZ-05) and Ranking Member Albio Sires (NJ-08) of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs issued the following joint statement regarding the recent expulsion of USAID from Bolivia.
"Yesterday's announcement by Bolivia's President Evo Morales that he is expelling USAID from the country represents a setback for the people of Bolivia. For nearly 60 years, the U.S. has partnered with Bolivian leaders from across the political spectrum to help improve local health care, education and infrastructure. Sadly, for the Bolivian people, it appears that President Morales' volatile leadership will end that longstanding partnership that sought to improve the lives of the average Bolivian, nearly 50 percent of whom live below poverty.
Going forward, we look forward to working with USAID to identify new collaborations in the region that will help our South American neighbors address some of their most serious challenges."--Chairman Matt Salmon (AZ-05) and Ranking Member Albio Sires (NJ-08)
