Rep. Matt Salmon (AZ-05) released the following statement regarding the Taiwan--Philippines dispute:
"Last week, within Taiwan's 200 nautical-mile-from-shore Exclusive Economic Zone, a Taiwanese fishing vessel was fired upon by the Philippine Coast Guard in South China Sea. As a result of this aggressive action by the Philippines, Hong Shi-cheng, a crew member and Taiwanese national, was shot and killed.
"I urge the Philippine government to fully apologize, provide appropriate compensation for the crewman's family, and conduct a thorough investigation of this matter in order to ensure accountability. Both Taiwan and the Philippines are close and treasured allies of the United States and it is important that they work together to fully and peacefully resolve this situation to the satisfaction of both parties.
"In addition, I hope this unfortunate incident can actually serve as a catalyst to bring the two governments together to negotiate an appropriate fishing contract between the two countries.
A formal agreement could have prevented this tragedy and I hope such an agreement will prevent any future occurrences such as this."
Rep. Salmon is a member of the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs.
