Cummings Issues Statement on April Jobs Numbers

Statement

Date: May 3, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Elijah E. Cummings (D-MD), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and a member of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement today in response to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' report that the U.S. economy added 165,000 jobs in April and the unemployment rate dropped to 7.5 percent:

"I am very encouraged that the unemployment rate has dropped to a four-year low, demonstrating that our fiscal policies are working slowly but surely to turn the economy around despite the obstacles created by sequestration and other drastic austerity measures promoted by congressional Republicans. The fact remains, however, that 11.7 million people are still looking for work and about 2.6 million families are still in danger of losing their homes. We need to enact economic policies now that will build on our progress by expanding job creation, assisting small businesses, and helping American homeowners."
