Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement to mark Memorial Day, which will be observed on Monday, May 27th:
"On Memorial Day, Americans pause to remember those who have perished in battle; to recall the deeds, the bravery, and the courage of those who have fought on our behalf; to honor the men and women in uniform who, in every generation, pay any price and bear any burden in the name of our liberty and our highest ideals. These Americans go to war not for accolades or recognition, but out of a sense of duty to our country and our values.
"Our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guardsmen volunteer to go to battle abroad so we can know security here at home. They are mothers and fathers, siblings and friends, neighbors and loved ones. Some make the ultimate sacrifice, never to return to their families, their homes, the nation they served. For them, for those who gave their "last full measure of devotion' on distant battlefields, we offer our gratitude and our deepest respect. We pledge to never forget them, their actions, and their heroism.
"As we mark another Memorial Day, we recommit to addressing the challenges of military families in our time: to ensure timely access to benefits; to end the claims backlog at the VA; to secure quality health care and good-paying jobs for our service members. On this day and every day, we must reaffirm our solemn promise: just as the military leaves no one behind on the battlefield, we will leave no veteran behind at home."
