Congresswoman Annie Kuster (NH-02) released the following statement today before voting against H.R. 3, the Northern Route Approval Act, which would force approval of the Keystone XL pipeline by removing the requirement of a Presidential Permit and by bypassing important environmental laws, including the Endangered Species Act and the Clean Water Act.
"Any project of the Keystone XL pipeline's scope and scale demands a thorough review to ensure the protection of public health, our economy, and the environment. Sidestepping that review is irresponsible and will short-circuit the public input process. While I share the goal of creating American jobs, supporting infrastructure projects, and securing energy independence, I have serious concerns with the impact the Keystone XL pipeline could have on our wildlife, water quality, and climate."-
In addition, Kuster cosponsored an amendment filed by Rep. Carol Shea-Porter (NH-01) that would clarify that nothing in H.R. 3 would authorize the proposed reversal of the existing pipeline between Portland, Maine and Montreal. This amendment was not allowed a vote.
